Altar of Fangs Dungeon Guide

Boss mechanics, interrupts, and loot for the three-boss dungeon beneath the Vaults of Atal'Utek — Rav'i, The Writhing Coil, and Zul'jan.

Altar of Fangs is a three-boss dungeon buried beneath the Vaults of Atal'Utek on the Coiled Isle, joining the Season 2 Mythic+ rotation the week of August 18. It's available on Heroic starting the week of August 11, with Mythic and Mythic+ opening alongside the rest of Season 2. This guide covers the entrance location, trash and boss interrupt priorities, a full mechanical breakdown of all three bosses (Rav'i, The Writhing Coil, and Zul'jan), and its loot table.

🛡 Interrupts, Dispels & Purges

Interrupts

  • Piercing Hiss — Primal Serpent (trash before Rav'i)
  • Paralyzing Shots — Twinfang Harrower (trash before Rav'i)
  • Regurgitate — Rav'i (Boss 1)
  • Toxic Atrophy — The Writhing Coil (Boss 2)

Dispels & Purges

  • Envenom — High Evolutionist (trash before The Writhing Coil)
  • Mass Envenom — Ula'tek's Chosen (trash before Zul'jan) — dispel only if the mechanic was failed
  • Ravenous Claws — Ravenous Descendant (trash before Rav'i) — purge

💡 General Tips & Trash Notes

  • Ravenous Descendant's attack speed buff is short but deadly for tanks — a short stun or a kite resets it, so don't just try to heal through it.
  • All totems in the first area must be clicked before you can proceed to Rav'i.
  • Use a CC ability to stop the Evolve cast from High Evolutionists in the trash before The Writhing Coil — letting it complete is a significant power spike for that pack.
  • In the second boss's trash room, focus down the shield on the Empowered High Evolutionist as soon as possible.
  • The Ascendant Serpent elite that spawns after The Writhing Coil must be defeated before you can continue toward Zul'jan.
  • Pre-assign starting positions for the Zul'jan soak lines before the pull — it's a lot easier to communicate a plan in advance than to call it live.
  • Soaking a single Boneslicer on Zul'jan removes all stacks of Ritual Venom at once.

🐉 Boss 1: Rav'i

"This ravenous hydra has survived this cursed place through scavenging the meat of the fallen. That doesn't mean it is not a fearsome combatant, eager to add some fresh temple explorers to its otherwise rotting diet."

Rav'i's arena is littered with Carrion Piles from earlier sacrifices. She periodically casts Ravenous Stomp, which drops Fresh Meat onto some of those piles. When she runs low on energy, she runs to the nearest Carrion Pile and starts Ssscavenging — or, if that pile has Fresh Meat on it, the much more dangerous Feeding Frenzy instead.

Key Abilities

  • Ravenous Stomp — a quake dealing minor Nature damage to all enemies and breaking stalactites from the ceiling. Each falling stalactite deals 320,042 Nature damage to anyone within 5 yards of impact, plus a 2-second stun. This also skewers a flying Twinfang, dropping Fresh Meat into the pit below — move out from under the ceiling when this casts.
  • Ssscavenging / Feeding Frenzy — Rav'i gains a damage-absorb shield and applies Carrion Burst (29,095 Nature damage every 3 sec, stacking) to the whole raid until the shield is broken. During Feeding Frenzy (eating Fresh Meat), that tick rate doubles to every 1.5 sec — this is the priority-burn window, get the shield down fast.
  • Messy Eater — while eating, Rav'i throws rotting meat chunks around the pit; each impact deals 116,379 Nature damage to anyone within 3.5 yards. On Mythic/Mythic+, chunks that aren't caught explode into an additional Carrion Burst application — spread out during eating phases.
  • Triple Shot — hits three players for 116,379 Nature damage each, plus a lingering 4 Nature damage/sec pulse to anyone standing within 5 yards of the target for 10 seconds. Spread from targeted players.
  • Regurgitate (interrupt) — three waves of stomach acid fired in lines for 290,947 Nature damage, plus -50% movement speed and -50% damage done to anyone hit. Interrupt this whenever possible; if you can't, dodge the lines.
  • Scent of Blood — if the nearest Carrion Pile already has Fresh Meat on it, Rav'i gains a passive +30% attack speed. Tanks should be ready for a damage spike after a Ravenous Stomp lands near a pile.

🐉 Boss 2: The Writhing Coil

In the feeding frenzy the Children of Ula'tek turned on each other, one snake proved victorious over the rest of its brood. Orweyna has learned to force it to Uncoil, splitting it apart to be defeated piece by piece.

The Writhing Coil alternates between a coiled melee phase and a split "Uncoiled Writhe" phase, forced by interrupting its channel with a raid-wide mechanic.

Coiled Phase

  • Death Rattle — every snake unleashes a rattle dealing escalating stacking Physical damage to the whole raid, applications increasing each second. This must be stopped by resolving Vine Grip: several players get vines attached to the Coil, and moving those players roughly 10 yards farther away from the Coil triggers Uncoil, splitting the boss and ending Death Rattle. If not everyone grabbed by Vine Grip runs, the raid wipes to Death Rattle.
  • Preparing Toxin / Toxic Atrophy — the Coil prepares to cast Toxic Atrophy three times in a row (interruptible). Each successful cast reduces raid damage done by 15% and movement speed by 10%, and the debuff stacks — interrupting this chain is a real DPS gain, not just a nicety.
  • Vindictive Onslaught — a directed attack sequence combining Burrowing Charge (burrows along the ground for 387,929 Nature damage to anything in its path) and Venom Jet (a cone spray for 387,929 Nature damage). Both are dodgeable if you watch the tell.
  • Tail Scythe678,876 Physical damage to the current tank target. Heavy single-target hit; plan cooldowns around it.
  • Synchronized Venom — hits all enemies for 87,284 Nature damage plus a DoT of 38,793 Nature damage every 1 sec for 35 sec.

Uncoiled Writhe Phase

  • Splitting into constituent snakes (Uncoil) deals 145,473 Nature damage to the raid on the split itself.
  • Spiteful Hunt (Mythic/Mythic+ only) — each Uncoiled Writhe fixates a player; if it reaches them, it applies Spiteful Venom (38,793 Nature damage every 1 sec, -5% damage done per stack for 3 sec, stacking). Kite fixated snakes away from the group.
  • Toxic Atrophy continues to apply during this phase as well — don't let interrupts lapse just because the boss is split.
  • Undermining — a Writhe destabilizes the earth beneath it, dealing 87,284 Nature damage and knocking back anyone above it.
  • Assimilation — the snakes converge and reform The Writhing Coil, ending the split phase. Damage dealt to individual Writhes persists into the reformed boss's health pool.

🐉 Boss 3: Zul'jan

With the Fang of Ula'tek, Zul'jan performs the final ritual to gain the power to release the monstrous weapon his ancestors sealed away thousands of years ago. Still held in the sway of the spirit of Malacrass, Zul'jan is unaware that the Fang is also the only hope for his sister Zul'jarra's survival.

Zul'jan is the most technical fight in the dungeon, defined by beam-soaking, poison-stack management, and controlling ricocheting axes around the arena.

Key Abilities

  • Ritual of the Fang — Zul'jan channels the altar's venoms into his dagger for 8 seconds via four snake-head beams. If left unintercepted, the beams empower him with Fang Empowered, which pulses 16 Nature damage to all players every 1 sec, stacking — this needs to be soaked. Players who intercept a beam instead take 4 Nature damage every 1 sec personally and get tagged with Ritual Venom, a dormant toxin that bursts for 40 Nature damage (Normal/Heroic) 50 seconds later — and stacks on Mythic and Mythic+, so soakers need a plan to shed it before it stacks out of control.
  • Bloodletting — Zul'jan's physical attacks cause hemorrhaging: this removes Ritual Venom stacks from him (not helpful to you directly) and leaves blood pools on the ground dealing 10 Nature damage every 1 sec to anyone standing in them. Stay mobile.
  • Boneslicer — hurls an axe at a player, dealing 18 Physical damage (ignores armor) to everyone caught in its path, plus a DoT of 5 Physical damage every 1 sec for 7 sec. Soaking a single Boneslicer clears all stacks of Ritual Venom off the raid — this is your primary tool for managing the beam-soak debuff.
  • Axegrinder — spinning axes that eviscerate anything they touch, dealing up to five hits of 13 Physical damage each (armor-ignoring). The axes ricochet around the room and lose damage as they slow down — dodge them early when they're still fast and dangerous.
  • Chop Down — two strikes at the current tank target for 50 Physical damage per hit.
