The Vaults of Atal'Utek β Zone Guide
Temple Assault tiers, Ancient Foes, and the full Altar of Corrosion / Corrosive Codex player-power systems.
The Vaults of Atal'Utek are the combat-focused counterpart to the rest of the Coiled Isle β a repeatable, escalating-tier world event where you push back the Children of Ula'tek, farm Corrosive Coins, and unlock the Altar of Corrosion power system. This guide covers how to get in, the three-tier Temple Assault activity loop, the Ancient Foe bonus encounters, and the full Corrosive Coin/Corrosive Codex player-power systems tied to the zone.
πΊ Access & Getting Around
The Vaults are a subzone of the Coiled Isle, unlocked through the quest What Lies Beyond the Fog early in the 12.1 campaign. Once open, three entrances lead in from the western end of the isle:
- Gate of the Western Fang β /way #16365 31.8 64.9
- Gate of the Serpent's Eye β /way #16365 43.4 44.2
- Gate of the Eastern Fang β /way #16365 45.4 64.9
Speak to Warleader Abdumati or Mok'sa the Stone just inside to pick up Into the Vaults of Atal'Utek, which introduces the zone's flightmaster and unlocks the major activities for your entire warband at once.
Getting Around Without Flying
- Spiritwing Gusts β running into one launches you forward and up, with a safe-glide buff to bring you back down.
- Spiritwing Feathers β grant 30 seconds of on-demand soaring flight.
- Bottled Spirits β grant short-range teleports (up to 35 yards, usable every 30 seconds) for 5 minutes, and disorient enemies at your landing spot.
- Amani Windcallers can bless you with Spirit Walk for bonus movement speed and brief stealth.
The zone also has repeatable treasure spawns β Soulcoiler's Caches and the rarer Soulcoiler's Troves β dropping Corrosive Coins, weekly profession knowledge items, and occasional gear or consumables. Troves often require Spiritwing Gusts or Feathers to reach.
β Temple Assaults β The Three Tiers
The core gameplay loop in the Vaults is escalating public events called Temple Assaults, unlocked via the quest Vaults of Atal'Utek: A Toxic Tour. A weekly quest, Purging the Vaults, asks you to complete at least one of each tier.
Tier 1 β Temple Patrols
Quick solo objectives lasting 1β2 minutes. Three are active at any time and refresh every 10 minutes. Reward: a Handful of Corrosive Coins worth 20 Corrosive Coins plus a small amount of gold. Only 5 of the 12 possible patrol types are active in a given week, so the rotation varies:
- Ash to Ash β burn 6 Slain Warriors
- Breath and Bile β collect Rotten Pneuma and Ophidian Bile
- Broken Bonds β free 6 Amani Soldiers
- Scavenged Weapons β gather 8 Scavenged Weapons
- Slay the Restless / Slay Children of Ula'tek β defeat nearby enemies
- Laid to Rest / Calming the Dead / Vengeance for the Dead β spirit-focused objectives
- Congealed Venom β gather 8 Congealed Venom
- Dragged Below β rescue 5 Desperate Warriors with a rope pull
- Siphon Venom β siphon a totem while avoiding ground effects
Tier 2 β Temple Strikes
Two related objectives, often against elites β soloable but faster in a group. One Strike is always active whenever a Temple Incursion isn't running. Reward: a Corroded Pouch worth 75 Corrosive Coins, 5 Veteran Mistcrest, and a chance at Voidlight Marl or Veteran-track gear. 3 of 6 Strikes rotate weekly:
- Profaned Pyres β gather souls, burn them, use the flames to smash sarcophagi
- Overflowing Venom β kill Summoned Snakes, interrupt 4 Summoning Rituals
- Purifying Earth and Sky β collect orbs as a Spiritclaw or Spiritwing
- The Underbelly β fight back Ula'tek's forces including 3 named elites, in the northernmost part of the zone
- Ruuk'jar's Clutch β destroy eggs inside portal chambers
- Cursed Depths β clear enemies in crevices beneath the Seal of Wrath
Tier 3 β Temple Incursions
Multiple objectives that must all be finished within a 10-minute window β this tier requires a party. Occurs 15 minutes after the previous Incursion ends, right after the current Strike completes. Reward: a Corroded Satchel worth 175 Corrosive Coins, 10 Veteran Mistcrest, and a better gear chance. Three possible Incursions rotate:
- Summoning Ritual β gather 21 ritual ingredients to summon and defeat an ancient spirit
- Cache of the Three β defeat enemies at three shrines to claim staves, then escort the carriers back
- Supplies Must Flow β escort a supply wagon through hostile territory past multiple barricades
π Ancient Foes
Immediately after a successful Temple Incursion, an Ancient Foe awakens with a 10-minute window to be defeated. Only one of the three possible Foes is active per week:
- Congealed Malice β a massive slime monster
- Susarikk β one of Ula'tek's earliest progeny
- Khu'tulak β an ancient, now-restless Amani spirit
Reward: a Venom-Drenched Sack worth 200 Corrosive Coins, 10 Champion Mistcrest, and a Veteran gear piece. Your first kill of the week additionally drops a Corrosive Soul and a Venom-Cursed Fragment. After that first Champion piece, the encounter keeps dropping Veteran gear and crests for repeat kills that week β it's worth farming even after your first clear.
β‘ Altar of Corrosion β Player Power
The Altar of Corrosion is a zone-limited talent tree unlocked through Er'inye, reached via the quests Vaults of Atal'Utek: One Coin Too Many and Vaults of Atal'Utek: The Altar of Corrosion. Its powers only function inside the Vaults and the wider Coiled Isle.
Currency & Costs
You spend Corrosive Coin with Er'inye to unlock Spirit Corrosion points. There are 21 points total: 15 purchasable directly, 2 from Zul'jarra's Forces Renown (at Renown 8 and Renown 14), and 4 from turning in unique relics. Every 5 points spent grants a passive Corrosive Coin find-rate bonus, maxing at +225%.
| Point # | Coins Needed | Running Total |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 1,000 | 1,000 |
| 5 | 3,000 | 10,000 |
| 10 | 8,000 | 40,000 |
| 15 | 20,000 | 115,000 |
Choice Nodes & Relics
Of the tree's 18 nodes, 4 are choice nodes that require finding a specific relic first:
| Relic | How to Get It | Unlocks |
|---|---|---|
| Lost Med'jai Amulet | Quest reward after looting a Dispelling Charm from High Priest Jin'tal | Surge Seniority / Spiritual Succession |
| Feather of Tok'jara | Quest reward after looting a Spirit Loupe from an Ancient Foe | Spirit Walk / Spectral Shipping |
| Mummified Lynx's Paw | Quest reward after looting a Corroded Key from a Temple Strike | Run of the Vaults / Glideways / Swift Steps |
| Eye of Szarith | Quest reward after looting an Excising Knife from a Temple Incursion | Broodmaster / Egg Specialist / Egg Evasion |
The center-path talent leading to Venom Coating β your main outdoor damage-over-time source, applying Poison on a proc chance β is generally considered the most important pick, since several other talents key off enemies being Poisoned.
β The Corrosive Codex β Power in Delves
While the Altar of Corrosion talents are limited to the Coiled Isle, the Corrosive Codex extends a related power system into all of Midnight's open world and into Delves, warband-wide.
Unlocking It
- Loot your first Corrosive Soul β from defeating an Ancient Foe, completing the weekly Purging the Vaults quest, or opening a Venom-Covered Chest pinnacle cache.
- That first Soul also grants the Codex of the Soul Coilers and the quest Corrosive Gifts: Corrosive Power.
- Bring the Codex to the Altar of Corrosion to learn to convert Corrosive Souls into Corrosive Gifts β your first Gift unlocks immediately.
Costs & Slots
- Each Gift costs 8 Corrosive Souls to permanently unlock β no discounts.
- You can only have 1 Gift active at a time until you've unlocked 8 different Gifts total (64 Souls spent), at which point a second active slot opens.
- Unwanted Souls can be exchanged for a Satchel of Corrosive Coins (100 coins) or a Delver's pouch of Undercoin (150 Undercoin) if you'd rather bank the currency than unlock more Gifts.
Notable Gifts
- Ula'tek's Gift β harmful abilities have a chance to apply 5 stacks of a Nature damage-over-time effect (10 stacks if you're already Poisoned), and at 20 stacks the effect "Corrodes," dealing its remaining damage instantly. Frequently recommended as the strongest single pick and the first one worth unlocking, since it deals heavy damage on its own without needing a second Gift to be worthwhile.
- Gorgoneion Gaze β below 50% health, petrifies all nearby enemies for 10 seconds (stunned and invulnerable); breaking free applies a Poison DoT and slow.
- Lithic Plumage β chance to cut incoming damage by 75% up to a cap that scales with how many nearby enemies are Poisoned.
- Virulent Mucus β grants 5 stacks on combat entry, each absorbing one instance of damage exceeding 5% of your max health.
Most Gifts key off the target β or you β being Poisoned, which can come from Venom Coating (Coiled Isle only), other Gifts, or Delve-specific poison sources. Building a couple of self-synergizing Gifts together outperforms picking two unrelated ones.
π Achievements & Mount Rewards
- Roll the Patrol / Spike the Strike / Submerge the Incursion / Oppose the Foes β complete every variant of each respective activity tier.
- Fully Corroded β unlock all 20 available talents at the Altar of Corrosion (of the 21-point max); grants a title and an Altar of Corrosion housing decor piece.
- Assault the Vault (meta-achievement) β grants the Venomous Coiler mount.
- Pro Poison Patroller β complete 250 Temple Patrols lifetime; grants the Emerald Skyfang mount.
The Skull of Er'inye vendor also sells zone-exclusive cosmetics for Corrosive Coin, including the Caustic Venomfang flying mount, several companion pets, full armor ensembles, and a large set of Corrosive-themed housing decor pieces (Egg of Ula'tek, Cauldron of Ula'tek, Soulcoiler-series items, and more).
