Cursed Surges, Cursed Fishing & Captain Tokka

All five Surge locations and timers, unlocking Cursed Fishing, the Captain Tokka reputation chain, farming Coiled Filament, and Envenomated Gathering.

Cursed Surges are the Coiled Isle's rotating open-world event: clear an activity, kill a rare elite, and the location floods with cursed fishing and gathering nodes for a limited window. That loop feeds directly into the Captain Tokka friendship reputation, the Coiled Filament currency, and the zone's best fishing rod. This guide covers all five Surge locations and their timers, how to unlock Cursed Fishing, the full Tokka reputation chain, and what the vendors actually sell.

🌊 Cursed Surges β€” How They Work

Cursed Surges are outdoor events rotating between five locations on the Coiled Isle. Each requires completing an activity to summon a rare elite enemy. Defeat it and you're rewarded with a Venom-Soaked Satchel, gear, and currency.

  • The rare elites are difficult solo but fall quickly to a group of just 2–3 players.
  • Each Surge can be completed for rewards daily.
  • A weekly quest, Turn Back the Surge, asks you to complete 3 Cursed Surges. It rewards a Venom-Covered Chest, 1,000 reputation with Zul'jarra's Forces, and a Spark of Tides.

Rewards & Rare Drops

Defeating Surge rare elites gives a chance at the Ruby Writhe and Topaz Skyfang mounts β€” the same random drops shared across Coiled Isle rares. Defeating Ss'akrithos, the rare in the northeastern part of the island, can drop a Diver's Key Fragment; collecting 3 creates a Diver's Key, used on the Sunken Diver's Chest on the northern island to unlock the Ancient Amani Mask toy.

Two achievements are tied to Surges: Turn the Surge and Cursebreaker, the latter granting a title.

πŸ“ Surge Locations & Rotation

Five spawn points rotate in a repeating pattern. Per the in-game Events menu, the rotation advances every 45 minutes. Watch for the event marker on your map to see which is currently active.

🎣 Unlocking Cursed Fishing

Completing the side quest Venom Fishing: Shell of Yourself unlocks Cursed Fishing, letting you fish from additional nodes that appear after a Cursed Surge is cleared.

  • After a Surge, both Cursed Fishing and Cursed Land and Waters are active at that location for up to 30 minutes.
  • Cursed gathering during that window is the only way to obtain Cursebound Globe and Neutralized Venom Clot β€” the two new profession materials added this patch.

Two further fishing unlocks come from the Tokka's Crew storyline: Venom Fishing and Temple Fishing, which let you detect additional fishing nodes across the isle and inside the Vaults of Atal'Utek. That storyline becomes available after completing the Original Sin campaign storyline.

🐟 Captain Tokka Reputation

Captain Tokka is a friendship-style reputation earned primarily through fishing content. Completing the Tokka's Crew questline builds reputation and unlocks the fishing detection abilities above.

Ways to Earn Reputation

  • Complete the Tokka's Crew storyline (requires finishing the Original Sin campaign storyline first).
  • After completing Venom Fishing: My Second-Best, repeatable quests unlock on the small nearby island of Tokka's Folly.
  • The Open Sea Fishing quest.
  • Defeating Master Grenadier Birdie, an NPC with a chance to spawn randomly while fishing on the Coiled Isle β€” worth 50 reputation per kill.

Captain Tokka himself is found at Tokka's Landing alongside Navigator Otoola. The reputation vendor, Second Mate Sluggs, is at Tokka's Folly.

πŸ’Ž The Coiled Huntress & Coiled Filament

The best rewards from this faction β€” the Sea-Dwelling Isle Serpent mount and the Envenomed weapon transmogs β€” require a currency called Coiled Filament, which you cannot earn until you've reached maximum Renown with Captain Tokka and purchased the fishing pole.

  1. Reach maximum reputation with Captain Tokka (the Captain Tokka's Crew achievement).
  2. Purchase The Coiled Huntress fishing rod from Second Mate Sluggs.
  3. Fish with it anywhere on the Coiled Isle β€” each successful catch grants +1 Venom stack on the rod.
  4. Bring the envenomed rod to Seasage Polo at Tokka's Folly, who cleanses it and grants 1 Coiled Filament per stack of Venom.

πŸ’° Vendor Rewards

Second Mate Sluggs (Tokka's Folly)

The main reputation vendor. Highlights:

  • Sea-Dwelling Isle Serpent β€” flying mount, requires the Captain Tokka's Crew achievement, bought with Coiled Filament.
  • Envenomed Deathblade (two-hand sword), Envenomed Game Ripper (polearm), and Envenomed Gavel (one-hand mace) β€” cosmetic weapons, also Coiled Filament.
  • The Coiled Huntress β€” the fishing tool that gates Filament farming entirely.
  • Venom Elemental companion pet and Recipe: Tokka's Multi-Ward β€” unlock at Venom Trawler rank 4.
  • Eerie Bauble β€” used to obtain the Three-Eyed Fish pet, Venom Trawler rank 4.
  • Several housing decor pieces: Traditional Tortollan Tent, Rustic Fishing Rack, Blue Tortollan Signpost.

Otoola is a vendor with no reputation requirement, but her wares cost Voidlight Marl plus specific starfish items you fish up around the isle: Pristine Polygon, Bulbous Benthos, and Beached Asteroid. She'll also exchange more common starfish for rarer ones. Her stock includes profession recipes (Enchanted Voidwell Fish, Tortollan Slingsack, Roaring Amani Garnet, Venom-Spiced Cutlets) and the Otoola's Recognition and Gold Starfish toys.

⛏ Envenomated Gathering & Renown-Gated Drops

Clearing a Surge also grants the Cursed Land and Waters buff in that area, which is what actually unlocks the temporary gathering and fishing nodes described above.

Mining & Herbalism

Envenomated nodes appear around the cleared Surge area. Channel a node and it disappears, leaving behind green orbs where it stood. Each orb grants roughly 12–15 Neutralized Venom Clot. These nodes are Neutralized Venom Clot only β€” you won't get the area's normal ore or herb from them.

Skinning

Skinning mobs while the Cursed Land and Waters buff is active has a separate chance to drop Neutralized Venom Clot, no dedicated node required.

Cursed Fishing Target

Once Cursed Fishing is unlocked, the specific catch in Surge-cleared waters is Blightswarmer. It has no crafting use as of this writing, but fishing it up is required for the achievements Angler of The Coiled Isle and Toxic Trophies.

Renown-Gated Surge Drops

Beyond the daily Venom-Soaked Satchel, your first Surge clear of the day has additional Renown-gated odds with Zul'jarra's Forces:

  • Renown 4 β€” chance at a Corrosive Soul.
  • Renown 8 β€” chance at a piece of Warbound Veteran equipment.

Surge bosses also drop Adventurer-track gear on every kill, making them useful as quick alt gearing even without the Renown-gated bonus rolls.
